WINNIPEG – Trinity Western's Regan Yee (South Hazelton, B.C.) earned a Canada West gold medal in the 3000m and a silver medal in the 1000m to lead a five-medal day for the Spartans at the conference championships Friday in Winnipeg at the James Daly Field House.
Yee, who entered the weekend first in the conference rankings in the 1000m, 1500m and 3000m, clocked a time of 9:22.70 to win the 3000m at the Canada West championships for the first time in her career. Over her five years as TWU, Yee has now has captured Canada West gold in all three of her events, including the 1000m in 2017 and the 1500m in 2016.
Prior to claiming the 3000m title Friday afternoon, Yee earned a silver medal in the 1000m with a time of 2:44.71. She has finished in the top two in the 1000m in each of her last three years at the conference championships, winning gold last year and silver in 2016. Yee will race in the 1500m Saturday.
The Spartans Madison Evans (Calgary) also earned an impressive result on the first day of the Canada West meet, finishing in a tie for second in pole vault with a clearance of 3.81m. The medal is Evans' first-ever at the Canada West championships. Last year, she finished fourth after clearing 3.71m.
Also getting in on the Spartans medal haul were Mirelle Martens (Grande Prairie, Alta.), who took bronze in the 3000m (10:05.13), and Rachel Jerome (Ladysmith, B.C.), who grabbed bronze in long jump with a season's best 5.57m.
On the men's side, the Spartans best efforts saw them put together three fourth-place finishes and two fifth-place results.
The Spartans 4x800m team, which featured James Lam (Langley, B.C.), Tyler Dejong (Langley), Levi Neufeld (Winnipeg) and Adam Marshall (Langley) set a Spartans record with a fourth-place finishing time of 7:42.10. The same group of four set the previous record of 7:42.12 at the conference championships Feb. 27. 2016 at the Saskatoon Fieldhouse.
In the 60m hurdles, David Boyd (Victoria) was fourth in 8.71, while Nick Colyn (Langley) was fourth in the 3000m in 8:23.91.
In long jump, Denzel Brown (Coquitlam, B.C.) was fifth with a season's best 6.86m, while Caleb De Jong was fifth in the 3000m (8:25.24) and Marshall was fifth in the 1000m (2:29.34).
