SPARTANS LOSE TO RIDGEBACKS IN OPENING MATCH AT NATIONALS
WOLFVILLE, Nova Scotia (U sports) – The Trinity Western Spartans quest for a fifth straight national championship final came to a heartbreaking stop as the Spartans lost 1-0 to the UOIT Ridgebacks in the CIS quarter final Thursday afternoon in Wolfville, N.S.
The loss sends the Spartans to the consolation side, while the win moves the Ridgebacks to the CIS championship semi-final match against Laval University. It is the first time that UOIT has advanced to the semi-finals.
"It was a fiercely contested battle," commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "It was a good goal for them, but it is disappointing because we had one or two of those chances as well and did not take them. And they took their chance that came across the box."
"Credit to them they won the battle and we knew that it always was going to be a battle that would probably be won by a half chance that someone was going to take advantage of that was going to be the difference."
The match was a battle for control from start to finish. At the end of regulation neither team had been able to find the back of the net with the few chances that were presented.
UOIT's Shynice Williams got the lone goal in the 106th minute of play to give the Ridgebacks the victory.
TWU's fifth year keeper Ally Williamson (Langley, B.C.) played the full 120 minutes in net for the Spartans, while Helen Frampton earned the shutout win for the Ridgebacks.
The Spartans, who have played in the last four CIS championship matches, were looking for their sixth CIS championship this season. TWU, who did not lose in Canada West conference play (11-0-3), have now lost two straight matches after losing 3-0 to UBC in the Canada West conference championship. It is the first time TWU has lost back-to-back matches since October 12, 2008 after losing 1-0 to UBC and 2-1 to Victoria the night before.
TWU will now play the Saskatchewan Huskies in the consolation semi-final tomorrow at noon AST. The Huskies, who were playing in their first ever CIS tournament, lost their opening round match 5-0 to the University of Laval.
