SPARTANS RUN BY WOLFPACK

LANGLEY, British Columbia – In the final game before the start of the second semester the Trinity Western Spartans defeated the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 89-66 in an exhibition game at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. 

"Tonight's game was a great team effort and a reflection of the hard work that we've been putting in throughout last semester and coming back from the break. The first group set the tone for good movement and team scores and that continued no matter who was on the floor. Everybody was ready to compete," commented TWU head coach Cheryl Jean-Paul. "I thought there was good composure and great shot selection and we're looking forward to bringing more of that into the second semester." 

Third year forward Tessa Ratzlaff (Abbotsford, B.C.) led the Spartans with 28 points and five rebounds, while Emma Piggin and Shenise Sigswortth with 14 points each led the WolfPack. Also contributing for the Spartans were fourth year forward Kayla Gordon (Prince George, B.C.) with 15 points, seven assists, and six rebounds and third year guard Jessie Brown (Langley, B.C.) with 10 points, five assists and three rebounds. 

The Spartans earned the win with a strong 10 minutes of play in the middle of the game. With five minutes remaining in the first half the Spartans outscored the WolfPack 12-4 to take a 47-37 halftime lead. Out of the break TWU went on a four minute 13-4 run to take control of the contest with a 60-41 lead. TWU would go into the fourth quarter with a 70-49 lead. 

The Spartans would finish up winning the final quarter 19-17 to make the final a 23 point win for the Trinity Western. 

The Spartans ended the contest shooting 57.8 percent (37-64) from the field, 53.3 percent (8-15) from the three point line and 87.5 percent (7-8) from the foul line. On the night the WolfPack struggled shooting. TRU finished shooting 34.8 percent (24-69) from the field, 21.7 percent (5-23) from the three point line and 65 percent (13-20) from the foul line. 

Trinity Western currently sits in a tie for fourth place in Canada West at 6-4, while Thompson Rivers is in a tie for 13th place at 2-8. 

The Spartans will begin Canada West action on January 6-7 when they will travel to Winnipeg to face the Wesmen. TWU first home games of 2017 will be on January 20 & 21 when they will host the Manitoba Bisons. 

Next up for TRU will be the Victoria Vikes on January 6-7 in Kamloops, B.C.

Game Notes: After the first half of the season (16 games, 7-9 overall) the Spartans are led by Tessa Ratzlaff with 16.4 pts/gm and 6.7 rebs/gm, Jessie Brown with 13.4 pts/gm and 3.1 rebs/gm, and Kayla Gordon with 11.9 pts/gm and 6.1 rebs/gm. Fourth year guard Luca Schmidt (Langley, B.C.) leads TWU with 3.7 assists per game…TWU rookie forward Juliet King (Duncan, B.C.) had her best game as a Spartan finishing with six points and six rebounds in eight minutes of play…TWU finished with a season high 25 assists…
