NO. 2-RANKED REGINA CRUISE TO CONVINCING WIN OVER SPARTANS

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The No. 2-ranked Regina Cougars came out flying in the opening quarter, out-scoring Trinity Western 27-6, and the final result was never in doubt, with the Cougars rolled to a 85-47 win Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

After Regina (5-1) eked out a six-point win on Friday, the story on Saturday was entirely different as the visitors showed why they are considered amongst the best in the country, shooting 52.2 per cent en route to a convincing 38-point win that capped the weekend sweep.

Since opening the season with four wins in their first five games, TWU has lost three straight and now sits at 4-4.

Regina had five players with double-digit point totals, including Britton Belyk, who had team-high 19 points and Angela Bongomin, who had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Kyanna Giles also had 12 points while Katie Polischuk and Michaela Kleisinger put up 11 points each.

Jessie Brown (Langley) had a team-high 15 points for the Spartans, while Ashleigh Barnes (Oceanside, Calif.) had one of her better games in a Spartan uniform, collecting six points and five rebounds.

After shooting 27.5 per cent from the field in Friday's game, Regina shot 52.2 per cent on Saturday. TWU was held to just 27.9 per cent. Similar to Friday's game, when Regina had a 58-40 edge in rebounds, the Cougars once again won the battle on the boards, with a 50-31 advantage.

In the first quarter, it was all Cougars early on as Regina opened a 19-2 lead, capped by back-to-back triples from Belyk. With a 17-point edge only five minutes into the contest, the Cougars were in full control the rest of the way.

The second quarter was more of the same, with Regina outscoring the home side by 14 points to take a 57-22 lead into halftime. The Cougars, who shot 72.7 per cent in the opening 20 minutes, were up by as many as 38 points before TWU's Brown dropped a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the first half.

The Spartans punched back in the third quarter and outscored the Cougars 21-14. Brown led the Spartans with 10 points in the quarter as they closed the gap to 26 points.

Regina scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to once again push its lead beyond 35 points before rolling out the bench and cruising to the win.

The Spartans are back at TWU's on-campus David E. Enarson Gym next weekend when they host Lethbridge Dec. 2-3. Regina is back at home when they host Saskatchewan Dec. 2-3.

Game Notes: Including preseason, Regina is now 17-1 on the season…the last time TWU beat the Cougars was Jan. 2, 2009, when the Spartans shocked a No. 2-ranked Regina team 83-56…TWU lost to Regina 57-51 on Friday.
