SPARTANS WIN FIRST EVER CANADA WEST TITLE, FINISH SECOND IN U SPORTS

QUEBEC CITY – Trinity Western's men's cross country team made program history at the U Sports national championships as the team won its first ever Canada West championship while, even more impressively, finishing second overall Saturday on the Plains of Abraham.

Led by Declan White (South Surrey, B.C.), who finished second in 30:56.0 over 10 kilometres, the Spartans put its leading five runners all inside the top 42 amongst U Sports athletes. In what was a remarkable team performance from TWU, the Spartans saw its five best finishers all cross the line within 1:22.2.

The Canada West championship ends a six-year run by Victoria as the conference title-holders and sees the men's team join the Spartans women's team atop the conference. TWU's women's team captured its fourth consecutive Canada West banner on Saturday.

Following White was Joel De Schiffart (Nanaimo, B.C.) who finished eighth overall in 31:15.9, while Caleb DeJong (Winnipeg), who was 17th overall in 31:34.4, Nick Colyn (Langley, B.C.) who was 19th in 31:36.4 and James Lam (Langley), who was 42nd in 32:18.3, rounded out TWU's top five. Tyler DeJong (Langley) was 81st in 33:31.1 and Adam Marshall (Langley) was 97th in 34:15.4.

"For our guys, every single one of them ran out of their minds," said Spartans coach Mark Bomba. "Considering we were missing Levi (Neufeld, Winnipeg), who picked up an injury late in the season, this was not expected. We thought we'd have a shot at the Canada West championship if we ran well, but finishing second in the country, I don't have words for what they did. Obviously all those guys ran well, but for James Lam to run the way he did, I couldn't be prouder. For them to come together and do exactly what they needed to do and in some cases more, is a testament to their perseverance."

With his result, White is the Canada West Male Athlete of the Year and also a U Sports First Team All-Canadian. Meanwhile, De Schiffart is a U Sports Second Team All-Canadian. White and De Schiffart, along with Caleb DeJong are all Canada West First Team All-Stars, while Colyn is a Canada West Second Team All-Star.

The only team to beat the Spartans on the day was Laval, who entered the race as the top-ranked team, the heavy favourites and the home side.

Last year, TWU finished second in Canada West and sixth overall.
