VANCOUVER – Trinity Western's men's volleyball team kept its perfect preseason record intact, knocking off UBC 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-22) to open the Blue Team Cup Thursday at War Memorial Gym.
Second-year Eric Loeppky (Steinbach, Man.) sparked the Spartans in the first set with a run of five straight aces to lead TWU to a 10-point win. Loeppky finished the set with eight aces as TWU set an early tone for the night. He added one more ace to finish with nine on the night.
The second and third sets were much tighter, but TWU escaped with consecutive three-point wins to secure the victory.
TWU is now 11-0 in preseason.
Head Coach Ben Josephson
"We cracked the first set wide open when Eric went on his serving run. It was an incredible serving display by Eric. After that, the game settled into what we expected. It was two teams slugging it out. But when you have a set lead, you always have a bit of a free feeling in the back of your mind and I just don't think (UBC) ever got their rhythm back after that serving performance.
"Overall, we had a lot of good performances from a lot of guys. Jacob Kern (Edmonton) was good. Pearce Eshenko (Banff, Alta.) was good. Jackson Howe (Calgary) was good. To get a performance like that on the road at this stage in the season makes us feel that we're getting pretty close to being ready to compete for real next weekend."
TWU is back at the Langley Events Centre Friday as the Spartans host UBC Okanagan at 6 p.m. in their second match of the Blue Team Cup.
