MEN'S TRACK & FIELD TEAM ADDS CLIFFORD TO MIDDLE DISTANCE FOLD

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western men’s cross country and middle distance groups took yet another step towards solidifying its place amongst the CIS elite, as Spartans coach Rob Pike officially announced the commitment of steeplechase star Deon Clifford (White Rock, B.C.) Thursday.

Clifford joins the Spartans with a decorated athletic past that has seen him compete in both the 2011 IAAF World Youth Championships in the 2000m steeplechase, finishing eighth, and the 2013 Pan American Junior Championships in the 3000m steeplechase, finishing fourth.

The 20-year-old Clifford, who graduated from Earl Marriott Secondary in 2012, transfers to TWU after previously competing intercollegiately with both Florida A&M University and Benedict College.

While with Florida A&M, Clifford was named the Outstanding Track Athlete at the 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships after winning both the 3000m and 5000m and finishing second in the mile.

During the following outdoor season, Clifford continued his conference dominance, as he won the 3000m steeplechase at the 2014 MEAC Track and Field Championships.

Clifford, who competes for Ocean Athletics, has personal best times of 8:59.29 in the 3000m steeplechase and 14:41.62 in the 5000m.

“Deon seems to have found a belonging back home here and feels comfortable with our training group,” Pike said. “He’s been training with us recently and I think he’ll fit in really well with our team. He helps complete our men’s cross country team and will definitely help put us into national contention. He’s obviously a great runner and has had great success over the years. We are excited to have him join us and we can’t wait to see what he can do at the CIS level.”

In his Grade 12 year at Earl Marriott, Clifford finished third in the 2000m steeplechase at the 2012 BC High School Championships. He was edged for second place by current Spartans middle distance runner and steeplechaser Joel De Schiffart (Nanaimo, B.C.).

Clifford comes to a TWU men’s cross country team that finished second in Canada West and seventh in the CIS in each of the past two seasons. Last year, the Spartans men’s track and field team finished third at the Canada West championships and seventh at the CIS championships.

He plans to study business at TWU.
