THE WEEKEND STORY
• The Spartans are coming off a bye and will host local rivals UBC and Victoria in a critical home weekend that will determine playoff berths and positions.
• Back-to-back wins for TWU will ensure the Spartans finish second in the Pacific Division and earn the right to host a Canada West quarter-final match. Any other result would create a variety of scenarios that could see TWU finish as high as second, but possibly still miss the playoffs.
• The Spartans are 3-1-3 at home this year, with their lone loss coming against Saskatchewan. The last time TWU was at home, the Spartans beat Fraser Valley 4-0.
• On Friday, TWU will be looking for its first win over UBC since 2009 – a stretch of 17 games in which the Spartans are 0-11-6.
• The last time the Spartans beat UBC was Oct. 2, 2009 when TWU won 2-1 at home. Current coach Mike Shearon, who was the associate head coach at the time, was the Spartans bench boss that night, with then-coach Pat Rohla sitting out after being given a red card in TWU’s previous match.
• In their season-opening meeting with the Vikes, TWU’s Leighton Johnson (Strathmore, Alta.) tallied a hat-trick in the Spartans 5-1 win over Victoria.
• TWU lost 1-0 against UBC in their meeting earlier this year.
• Johnson is tied for third in Canada West with nine points.
• Spartans goalie Sebastian Colyn (Langley) is fifth in the conference in saves (49) and save percentage (.790).
• UBC’s Victory Shumbusho is second in Canada West in goals, with seven.
• Victoria’s Isaac Koch is tied for the conference lead in shots (45).
