WINNIPEG – The University of Manitoba Bisons outperformed the Trinity Western Spartans to take a 92-62 win Saturday night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.
Manitoba dominated early on, but TWU came to compete in the second and third quarters, though ultimately falling short in the fourth quarter. The Bisons led by 30 points for most of the last quarter, effectively capturing the win.
With the victory, Manitoba improved its record to 7-9, while Trinity Western remains winless at 0-16.
A hot-shooting Bisons side shot 51.6 per cent from the 3-point line, knocking down 16 shots from beyond the arc on 31 attempts. Conversely, TWU shot 23.1 per cent (9-39) from distance.
For the Bisons, Rashawn Browne had a team-leading 14 and nine rebounds, while Malik Irwin tallied a team-high six assists.
After trailing 44-28 at halftime, the Spartans closed the gap early in the third quarter, getting within eight points, at 52-44. However, a series of 3-pointers by Keiran Zziwa and Zach Giesbrecht insured the Herd kept a sizable lead, with Manitoba closing the quarter with a 71-48 lead. From there, the Bisons cruised to the 30-point victory.
The Bisons dominated early in the first quarter, taking a 23-9 lead after 10 minutes. TWU was better in the second quarter, with Manitoba outscoring the Spartans by just two points, 21-19 in the frame. However, the Bisons Giesbrecht sent Manitoba into the break with a 16-point lead, 44-28, after he hit 3-point buzzer beater.
At half, Allison led in points for TWU, scoring 10 of the team's 28 points. For the Bisons, Browne led with 11.

"I thought we competed. In the first quarter, Manitoba came out and hit us hard. They scored a lot of points really fast and they were playing really well. I just encouraged our guys to keep it close going into the third. Our guys responded really well, we just didn't control tempo enough."
The Spartans are back on the road next weekend when they travel to play Lethbridge Jan. 25-26.
