VANCOUVER – Conor Morgan, Grant Shephard and Phil Jalalpoor led the way for the UBC Thunderbirds, who cruised to a 118-65 victory over the visiting Trinity Western Spartans, Friday at War Memorial Gym.
Morgan scored a game high 25 points and added eight rebounds while Shephard and Jalalpoor chipped in with 19 points each helping the T-Birds improve to 5-2 on the season.
The 'Birds were able to execute early and often playing an up-tempo brand of ball that had them leading 26-15 after the first quarter and increasing to a 58-33 advantage by halftime. Morgan and Jalalpoor shared the team high of 16 points each at the break.
Fourth-year guard Vartan Tanielian (Surrey, B.C.) scored a team-high 20 points and added six rebounds for the Spartans, who remain winless on the season with an 0-7 record.
The 'Birds have now reached the 100-point plateau in five of seven conference games and have earned three-straight wins.
• The Spartans Ethan DaSilva (Calgary), who is in his first year with TWU after transferring from Briercrest College, had a season-high seven rebounds to lead the Spartans.
• The Spartans shot just 35.8 per cent from the field, while UBC shot 58.3 per cent.
• TWU was 7 for 28 from 3-point range, while UBC was 11 for 24.
The Spartans and UBC play the rematch Saturday at 7 p.m. (PT) at War Memorial Gym.
